November 27 is the Feast of the Miraculous Medal. On this day in 1830, Mary appeared to Saint Catherine Laboure for the second time in Paris, France.

During her apparition, the Blessed Virgin instructed St. Catherine to create a medal showcasing what she saw — Mary standing on a globe, crushing a serpent, while her outstretched hands radiated light.

"She wore many rings set with gems that shone rays of light over the globe. When asked why some of the gems did not shed light, Mary reportedly replied, 'Those are the graces for which people forget to ask.'" —Catherine Labouré

The last line is striking. We must not neglect to ask. We are to lean on Mary’s intercessions and have confidence in Christ’s providence for us.

The beautiful details on both sides of this inspired medal remind us to do so.

With that reminder, we should stop, take a breath and exhale confidence. Let’s trust in our Heavenly guardians, regardless of our worldly circumstances.

So, while we celebrate the Feast of the Miraculous Medal, let’s think about how we carry ourselves on a daily basis.

  • Do we rest in God’s promises, along with those of Mother Mary?

  • If not, are there physical reminders we can (and should) use to keep ourselves tethered during times of uncertainty?

  • If we’re aware of how quickly our mind can leap to worst-case scenarios, what tangible or visual reminders do we need to return our thoughts back to Him?

The Miraculous Medal might be just what you or a loved one are looking for to instill confidence and peace.
