The Seven Sorrows of Mary Devotion
As we know, the human condition leads us to great and small tragedies in our lives. Sometimes these are even found in the daily crosses we carry. We have a great intercessor who has experiencced a range of emotions in the presence of our Lord — The Blessed Virgin Mary, also known as Our Lady of Sorrows.
One way we can unite our struggles and prayer intentions to Our Lady is through reflecting on her seven sorrows. The Seven Sorrows of Mary are a traditional Catholic devotion that reflects on the key events in the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary that caused her great sorrow. These sorrows are:
1. The Prophecy of Simeon: Simeon tells Mary that a sword will pierce her heart (Luke 2:34-35).
2. The Flight into Egypt: Mary and Joseph flee to Egypt to save Jesus from King Herod (Matthew 2:13-15).
3. The Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple: Mary and Joseph search for Jesus when He is lost in Jerusalem (Luke 2:41-50).
4. Mary Meets Jesus on the Way to Calvary: Mary encounters Jesus carrying His cross (Luke 23:27-31).
5. The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus: Mary stands at the foot of the Cross as Jesus dies (John 19:25-30).
6. The Body of Jesus Being Taken Down from the Cross: Mary receives the lifeless body of Jesus in her arms (Mark 15:42-46).
7. The Burial of Jesus: Mary watches as Jesus is laid in the tomb (John 19:40-42).
Special Devotion to the Sorrowful Heart of Mary for Mothers
The devotion to the Sorrowful Heart of Mary is particularly meaningful for mothers, as it emphasizes the deep emotional and spiritual connection between Mary and her Son, Jesus. Many mothers find comfort and strength in this devotion, seeing in Mary a model of enduring love and faith in the face of suffering.
The Sorrowful Heart of Mary can be a source of solace and inspiration for mothers dealing with their own sorrows, offering a way to unite their sufferings with those of Mary and Jesus.
In September, which is traditionally dedicated to the Sorrowful Heart of Mary, many Catholics observe this devotion by meditating on the Seven Sorrows, praying the Seven Sorrows Rosary, or offering special prayers for the intercession of Mary in times of grief and difficulty.
This month I invite you to call on Our Lady of Sorrows each morning before you begin your day, asking her to pray for you and a particular intention.
